Redigging The wells of Revival” (John 20)
We are ending a series entitled “Redigging the wells of revival”
In every revival we experience a fresh revelation of Jesus!
Revival begins in our hearts.
Our prayer is that you will have a fresh revelation of Jesus.
The gospel of john was the last one written, John was very clear why he wrote another gospel.
Joh 20:30 Now there are many other wonder-works which Jesus performed in the disciples' presence which are not recorded in this book.
Joh 20:31 But these have been recorded, in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life, as bearers of His name.
John dedicated half of his book to present Jesus final week.
Last Sunday we celebrated Jesus’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem the fulfillment of the words of Zachariah the prophet
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O Daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King (Messianic King) is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with salvation, Humble and unassuming [in submission to the will of the Father] and riding on a donkey, Upon a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Jesus introduced himself publicly, for the first time as the king of Israel, their promised Messiah.
History tells us if a king was coming in peace he would come on a donkey, if a king was riding a horse, it was for war.
When He comes the second time, He will come for war, He will separate good from evil, He will punish the evil one and all those who follow him.
Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who was riding it is called Faithful and True (trustworthy, loyal, incorruptible, steady), and in righteousness He judges and wages war [on the rebellious nations].
The 10th of the Hebrew month of Nisan, in the Julian Calendar, the 6 of April of 32 AD.
This happened on 10th of the Hebrew month of Nisan the same day when Jewish families would select a lamb without spot or defect to be sacrificed on the 14th day of Nisan for the Passover. Jesus was crucified on the 14th
Jesus had his last supper with the disciples on a Thursday, the Last Supper was significant because Jesus showed his followers that he would become the Passover Lamb of God.
On the 14th of Nisan Jesus was crucified, carrying the sins of the world upon himself as families were slaughtering their lambs to celebrate God’s deliverance.
They removed him from the cross and buried him.
But early Sunday morning He rose from the dead.
Jackson is going to help us remember chapter 20 of John.
Let’s pray
Today we are on chapter 20 of John
Joh 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] removed from the [groove across the entrance of the] tomb. [Mat_28:1-8; Mar_16:1-8; Luk_24:1-10]
This happens around the 3 watch, in between 3 and 6 am, John wrote about Mary Magdalene but there were other women with her as the other gospels shared. Maybe because she was the one who went to get them.
Joh 20:2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple (John), whom Jesus loved (esteemed), and said to them,
"They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him!"
Mary assumed, they have taken him away, there was no they, Jesus rose from the dead. Mary Magdalene was looking for her Lord’s dead body, we don’t know much about Mary Magdalene except that she was delivered from 7 demons, and she was from Magdala.
Joh 20:3 So Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. [Luk_24:12]
Joh 20:4 And the two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first.
This was urgent for them, they didn’t wait, they ran there immediately.
Luk 24:10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
Luk 24:11 And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
Luk 24:12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
Joh 20:5 Stooping down and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings [neatly] lying there; but he did not go in.
Joh 20:6 Then Simon Peter came up, following him, and went into the tomb and saw the linen wrappings [neatly] lying there;
Although the word saw, in these 3 verses were translated in English as saw, in Greek they had 3 different meanings
Verse 5 Blepo he look at, he saw the linen wrappings neatly lying there,
Verse 6 Peter went in the-or-eo, as an spectator, trying to discern
Joh 20:7 and the [burial] face-cloth which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the [other] linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.
Joh 20:8 So the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, went in too; and he saw [the wrappings and the face-cloth] and believed [without any doubt that Jesus had risen from the dead].
Verse 8 John went in eidos, a view that is form, he got it.
Now, the Greek construction indicates that the linen clothes that were wrapped around Jesus were still lying in a circular form as though a body were in them.
Joh 19:38 And after this, Joseph of Arimathea--a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews--asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away His body. [Mat_27:57-61; Mar_15:42-47; Luk_23:50-56]
Joh 19:39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him at night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, [weighing] about a hundred [Roman] pounds.
Joh 19:40 So they took Jesus' body and bound it in linen wrappings with the fragrant spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
Joh 19:41 Now there was a garden at the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb [cut out of solid rock] in which no one had yet been laid.
Joh 19:42 Therefore, because of the Jewish day of Preparation, and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
The linen was undisturbed a collapsed cocoon the head band it was folded separately
Joh 20:9 For as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. [Psa_16:10]
Joh 20:10 Then the disciples went back again to their own homes.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
Joh 20:11 But Mary [who had returned] was standing outside the tomb sobbing; and so, as she wept, she stooped down and looked into the tomb;
Joh 20:12 and she saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Joh 20:13 And they said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him."
Joh 20:14 After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Maybe because was still dark, she was crying and maybe because Jesus new body was not easily recognizable, perfectly enhanced, the disciples did not recognize Him on the way to Emmaus either.
Joh 20:15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you crying? For whom are you looking?" Supposing that He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you are the one who has carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him, and I will take Him away."
She was responding out of her emotions and pain, what would she do with a corpse, carry him?
Joh 20:16 Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which means, Teacher).
Jesus reveal Himself by calling her name, she probably gave him a death grip.
Joh 20:17 Jesus said to her, "Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and tell them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'"
Joh 20:18 Mary Magdalene came, reporting to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
Joh 20:19 So when it was evening on that same day, the first day of the week, though the disciples were [meeting] behind barred doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace to you."
Joh 20:20 After He said this, He showed them His hands and His side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with great joy.
Joh 20:21 Then Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you [as My representatives]."
Joh 20:22 And when He said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. [Act_1:8; Act_2:1-3]
Joh 20:23 If you forgive the sins of anyone they are forgiven[because of their faith]; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained [and remain unforgiven because of their unbelief]."
Jesus and Thomas
Joh 20:24 But Thomas, one of the twelve [disciples], who was called Didymus (the twin), was not with them when Jesus came.
Joh 20:25 So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe."
Joh 20:26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, "Peace to you."
Joh 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but [stop doubting and] believe." [Luk_24:39]
Joh 20:28 Thomas answered Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Joh 20:29 Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God] are they who did not see [Me] and yet believed [in Me]."
This is the most important well of revival, to welcome Jesus in the power of His Resurrection. As our Risen Lord.
Jesus is alive, He is not dead.
And for all those who have believed in Him, He gave eternal life.
3 important things happens when we meet our resurrected Lord.
1 We move from darkness to light from death to life
1 We move from darkness to light from death to life
Joh 5:24 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Mary, Peter and John came to see a dead corpse, but they found a living Savior, are you looking for Jesus?
Jesus knows how you will recognize Him, Mary did by him calling her name. Is He calling your name ?
2 We move from curses to blessings .
2 We move from curses to blessings .
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and pain and acquainted with grief; And like One from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or esteem Him.
Isa 53:4 But [in fact] He has borne our griefs, And He has carried our sorrows and pains; Yet we [ignorantly] assumed that He was stricken, Struck down by God and degraded and humiliated [by Him]. [Mat_8:17]
Isa 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; The punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, And by His stripes (wounds) we are healed.
Jesus took all our sins, iniquities, curses, infirmities, sorrows and pain. So we could be forgiven, set free and blessed.
3 Move us from being powerless, to walk in power and authority with Him, forever
3 Move us from being powerless, to walk in power and authority with Him, forever
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
What a privilege it is to be reminded that because of Jesus’s sacrifice, His punishment, death and resurrection, salvation came to the ends of the world. Right here to Hawaii.
The great awakening began in 1730s 1740s a revival that impacted the English colonies in America
The second awakening 1790-1840 a great move of God and we are part of it

Joh 3:16
To receive Jesus we need to accept Him as God’s son,
repent from our sins and a life of selfishness,
and ask Him to be our Lord and savior, not that you deserve it, but is a gift from God.
If this is your desire today, please repeat this prayer after me?
Heavenly Father I’m sinner,
I’m sorry for my sins,
I’m willing to turn away from my sins.
I receive Christ as my savior,
I confess him as Lord
from this moment on I want to follow and serve him,
in the fellowship of his church,
In Jesus name. Amen!
